![]() Let me start by saying that I was never that big an X-Men fan. Oh, I understand the appeal of the series and can't deny its success. And I gave it a chance. I followed the book for a few years before dropping it. But it never "clicked" with me like other series did. So, what about the movie? I liked it a lot. If they ever made a Batman movie with this much respect for the characters it'd be Star Wars box office. And it wasn't just that they understood the comics. They had an understanding few comic writers have. They "got" that there's a long history of stories and character relationships here. They used that to create a rich environment and a sense of depth to the reality of the movie. Just like the plentiful background detail in the Star Wars movies. You get a sense that there's so much more to be seen. I hope they point the way toward better comics movies. But the morons in H'wood are dumber than labrador retrievers even after they've had their noses rubbed in doody. They'll probably think it's the more "adult" language and Rebecca Stamos.
Where was I? Oh yeah, the movie! X-MEN got off the blocks in the first reel. None of these long drawn out origin stories that make the plotline of the movie creak under their weight. Cooking Recipes! The PSD to HTML transition calls for a specialist approach, best left to the professionals... It was also a relief to see a comic book movie taking place in something closer to the real world. We didn't get some retro-futuristic, dystopic metropolis like the ones in Batman or The Crow or Mystery Men. Those movies are going to seem so '90s in a few years. Much like the over-use of the wah-wah pedal in film soundtracks in the '70s. And the cameos were great for comic fans but those scenes were written with newcomers in mind. The bit with Kitty Pryde was cool for us fans but it was also used to hype the weirdness of the Xavier School. That's good writin'! But I ached by the end of the film for even a glimpse, far off in the distance, of the Fantasi-car or Thor soaring through the sky. If they do an FF movie this good I'll die a happy man. I'd give it a solid B+. A fun night at the movies.
