Looking at the Year 2000

12-2-'99

As of Novermber 30th I'm no longer exclusive to DC Comics. I didn't renew my contract for a variety of reasons and there's no bad blood or even a trace of ill will toward the folks at 1700 Broadway. I am not, in any way, parting company with DC and the majority of my work will still be for them as I continue with Nightwing, Robin and Birds of Prey. They treat me just fine and I have many friends there.

That said, I guess it's safe to say that I didn't renew 'cause I got the freelancer itch to explore other characters. I'll be doing several things outside of DC in the coming year. Dark Horse has tendered the offer for a limited series and Bongo wants me to write a few more Simpsons stories.

But the big news (for me anyhow) is that I'll be writing a monthly for Marvel for the first time in a long time. It's a group book featuring a few characters I've written before and several I've never been associated with. I don't want to let the cat out of the bag before Marvel makes their announcement but I will say that I'm really excited by this project. I'll be working with two of my favorite artists in the business and I've been given very free rein to go wild in the Marvel Manner. More on this project as it progresses.

I have quite a few interesting things coming up at DC in the near future. John vanFleet and I have another project to follow up on THE CHALICE. It will be a two part prestige mini-series faeturing Batman and will be in current continuity. It will feature the same kind of grand themes and epic scale that made THE CHALICE so special and will intro a new villain. I'm also busy on ROBIN: YEAR ONE with Scott Beatty and Javier Pulido. We're into Book Three's script now. I've written the first three of the four part Superman/Aliens2 with Jon Bogdanove and Kevin Nowlan on the art and the stuff is looking great! The biggest project I've ever worked on in terms of action. It's Kirby, man!

I'm also doing two of this summer's 80 page Giants. In the Robin 80 page Giant we'll have some surprise guest stars and a major continuity event that's been too long in the coming. The Spoiler will be along as well and a brand new villain. A Batman 80 pager will feature the return of Calendar Man. It'll be the same Julian Day we all thought was such a lame-o in the past. But he'll have a brand new motivation and costume and gang and I'm hoping he'll join the pantheon of more dangerous Bat-villains as a legitimate contender. It's a kick getting to work on these extra-length stories. Especially with the Calendar Man. I've had this story in mind for him for years but needed a special venue for it. This 80 pager provides that.

Anyhow, more of the same in 2000 with some extra projects thrown in. Juts thought you folks would want to read it here first. And thanks for your loyal support of this site over the past year! I promise more surprises coming soon!
