Dateline Chicago!

7-21-'99

I had a great time at Giordano's (the restaurant not the master inker's house) and meeting a whole LOT of you face to face. That and the 10 Commandments talk were the highlights.

I'd like to thank all of you who attended the talk. The crowd was larger than last year and was SRO. I'm very gratified. The questions were terrific and thanks for laughing at my jokes (especially when I didn't think I was making any.).

Not a lot of real business got done at the con for me. DC will be making more announcements about their plans in 2000 at San Diego which I'm not attending.

But I CAN finally tell you that I'm very happy with my new art teams. Pete Woods and Jesse Delperdang will kick tail in a major way on ROBIN. You probably anticipate the same extraordinary work from Greg and Drew on NIGHTWING. Jackson Guice was a logical choice for BOP and the pencils I've seen so far are VERY exciting! Once again, I am blessed to work with mega-talents.

I will certainly miss Scott and Karl on NW but we'll be doing a Nightwing prestige book in the coming year.

Got to hang with my old pals at the con, Graham Nolan, Gordon Purcell, Scott Beatty, Todd Fox, Teddy (The Fan With No Name)Haycraft, Beau (If I don't mention his name he'll cry like a little girl) Smith, Scott Hileman, Dan Jurgens, Greg Land and his adorable wife Trish and their cute new addition Shelby and Andy Kuhn and a gang of others. Got to meet some new pals like Webmaster Scott McCullar and Mike Hutchinson.

Weirdest Moment of the Con Dept. At dinner on Saturday night a pro-wrestler for the WWF named Raven came up to me and told me what a big fan he was of my stuff. I was taken aback. I'm not a wrestling fan but I knew his name. It was very strange to have this guy who could probably twist my head off like a poptop quote dialogue of mine and relate his fave scenes from some of my stories. And all with great enthusiasm. Comics is a brotherhood!

Second Weirdest Thing at the Con Dept. Had Breakfast at the Sofitel on Friday morning and Bob Greenberger pointed out that most of the cast from the original Star Wars trilogy were at a table behind us. Sure enough Kenny Baker, David Prowse, Jeremey Bulloch and Peter Mayhew were chowing' down on bagels and danish.

Bought a raft of comics (old '50s and '40s war and western and funny animal stuff) on the cheap. And a pile of BATMAN FAMILY giants to catch up on that segment of Bat-history I missed out on in the '70s.

Other than that it was the usual hectic fun. Caught a movie Sunday night. Whatever you do stay away from LAKE PLACID. Easily the worst movie I've paid to see in a theater in years. The movie is a croc from beginning to end.

Anyhow, nice to meet you folks and put faces to the names and avatars. And from the looks of the traffic on the site since I left a lot of you actually took my handouts home!

See you next year.

Chuck
