So,
Bobbie Chase called me from Marvel and asked if I'd be interested
in doing a limited series. She got no further in her description
of the mini than the menation of Doom and I said "Yes!"
I've been a fan of Victor vonDoom's since his first appearance
in Fantastic Four #5. I couldn't get enough of the guy. When his
origin appeared in FF Annual #2 I read it and re-read it until
the pages began to fall out and had to be scotch-taped back in.
If you were to comb through my collection you'd find that I have
almost every Dr Doom appearance he ever made. Sometimes the only
issues of a series I own will be the ones with Doom in them. A
huge litho of Kirby's old Dr Doom Marvelmania poster hangs just
to my right as I write this. I sip coffee from a Doom mug.
I guess that establishes my fanboy credentials anyway.

Doom's always fascinated because he's the perfect model of the
tragic Marvel character. He lost his family while a young man.
Then he lost his face. Later he lost the love of his life. That
he reacted rather badly to all of this doesn't change the fact
that this character has depth. And I really believe that Doom
is doing what he does with the best intentions. He truly thinks
the world would work a lot better under his rule. Maybe happiness
and freedom would be in short supply but what do they're hollow
concepts next to the security and order offered by Doom. Such
is his ego. You gotta love the guy.
His rivalry with Reed Richards is his Achilles Heel. Doom always
seems so cool and collected and self-assured. But toss Mr Fantastic
into a conversation and Dr Doom becomes the runner-up for Prom
Queen. This unexpected pettiness makes him human for us. What
a character! How could I say no?
The limited series finds Doom, without weapons or armor (in fact,
buck naked!), wandering the wastelands on the Celestial-created
Doomworld. He's friendless (no stretch for Doom) and powerless
in a world hostile to him. His challenge is to struggle back to
control of this world and escape back to Earth. This will provide
the backstory for events coming up in the FF's regular monthly.
I don't want to give away too much or spoil surpises that Chris
Claremont is setting up.
The art on the mini is by Leonardo Manco fresh off Blaze of Glory.
And the art is as gorgeous as you might think it is. This story
moves from primordial survival to world conquest and Leonardo
handles it all magnificently.
The series should appear this Summer.
